Industrial Visit to IGI Airport Project
An industrial visit was organized for the students of tbs, Delhi on the 20th November with the objective of providing an exposure to world class International Project planning and execution. On arrival, the students were given a detailed audio-visual presentation about the conceptualization of the project, challenges in its execution and success in early commercialization. The students were also explained the scope of the project with the help of a detailed model at DIAL office.
Senior officers of Delhi International Authority Ltd (DIAL) interacted with the students extensively on various aspects of their queries about facility planning, phasing of the project keeping in view non-disruption of the existing activities of an existing airport and expectations of the Government of India and international agencies and at the same time achieving highest standard of physical and financial efficiency. The back up facilities required in such a sensitive project which has zero tolerance level were also highlighted during the presentation.
While the presentation and discussion in the well appointed DIAL office was conducted by Mr. Srikant Bhandarkar, Associate General Manager and Mr. Avigyan Sengupta, Corporate Communications Manager, Mr. Deepak Pahwa, Manager (Project) and Mr. Asjad took special interest in showing the students the physical dimensions of the project.
It is quite commendable that GMR completed the project in a record time of 37 months and got a Airport Council International rating of 4.32 against the expected 3.50(as per the directives of the Government of India).The project had an outlay of Rs. 12000 crores and the project area spanned 5100 acres. Presently there are 3 runways available for simultaneous landing and take-off which includes contingency provision. The total number of airlines operating through the airport is 62 out of which 7 are national and 55 international. This project has put India on the world map catering to a whooping 34 million customers every year. It is also proving itself to be the gateway to India.
